Ancient Roman Glass Mold Blown Janiform Head Vessel Eastern Mediterranean Circa 2nd Century AD. A rare unguent or perfume bottle, depicting the naturalistic young head of a boy, perhaps representing eros or cupid with his curly hair and thin nose; Similar on on either side; cylindrical neck and flared lip. Of the fairly large series of mold blown head flasks, by far the greatest number are double or janiform flasks. This type seems to have been a second century invention and it continues into the third and fourth centuries. Intact. Nice iridescence. Size 3-1/2 inches H. Provenance Eugene F. Behlen, Englewood FL . A similar example can be found in Ancient Glass in the Yale University Art Gallery, by Susan B. Matheson; nos 189 to 101.
