Description

RARE LOUISIANA CHERRY AND MAHOGANY CREOLE-STYLE CHIFFONIER / WORK TABLE, the rectangular molded-edge top with slight overhang above two short drawers and two full drawers, flanked by paneled ends, the whole raised on delicate cabriole legs. Cypress secondary wood (by sight). Retains an old surface with warm color. First quarter 19th century. 28 1/2" H, 17 1/4" x 20 1/2" top.
Literature: See Furnishing Louisiana, pp.259-263 for similar examples of Creole-style cabriole-leg stand tables.
Provenance: From the private collection of Sarah Donnelly, Esmont, VA.
Catalogue Note: The presently offered chiffonier or lady's work table, a distinctive regional form of French Creole influence, closely parallels an inlaid example recently acquired by the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation. Both tables exhibit nearly identical skirt and leg profiles, paneled ends, and molded-edge top with slight overhang. The CW example, somewhat taller, retains a mixing slide above the top drawer, a clear indication of its place (i.e., the dining room) in a household's geography. While the specific purpose of the presently offered table is not entirely clear, it is likely a piece designed for use as a lady's work table in the bedchamber or other appropriate space.

Condition

Good overall visual condition with scattered wear. Early restoration to drawer facings and possibly top. Brasses replaced. Old breaks and repair to proper left front foot.
