Description
NATIVE AMERICAN ACOMA POTTERY WEDDING VASE, traditional two-spout form with connected grooved handle, featuring red, black, and white geometric slip design. Hand-brushed "ACOMA / N. MEX." to underside. Acoma Pueblo, New Mexico. Mid 20th century. 8 1/2" HOA.
Catalogue Note: Acoma wedding vases are filled with symbolism and play an important role in a couple's marriage ceremony. Prior to the wedding, the groom's parents are responsible for its modeling. One spout represents the wife, the other her husband, and the connecting handle represents their union. It is tradition for the couple to drink from the vessel, first individually and then together; if they manage this feat without spilling a drop, it is believed they will always have a strong, cooperative relationship.
