Description
AMERICAN / BRITISH NEEDLEWORK SAMPLER, silk on linen, six alphabet and numeral rows segmented by bands of decorative stitching, lower half featuring a six-line verse titled "On Filial Duty", surrounded by pictorial motifs of flowers and birds, signed at the bottom edge "Eliza Lea Finished June 14th 1838" within a foliate frame, all encompassed by a scrolling vine border with shamrock-type leaves. Housed under glass in a period veneer frame. Dated 1838. 19 1/8" x 19 7/8" sight, 23 3/4" x 24 1/2" OA.

Condition
Good to very good visual condition with some toning to linen, stains and holes mostly along edges, some thread with fading and fugitive color, frame with wear, surface scratches, cracks and some chips to veneer as well as a few pieces partially separated from frame, and other imperfections. Not examined out of frame.
