Description
American Needlework Sampler by Louisa Levering. Embroidered in wool on linen weave. Strawberry and vine border, enclosing six alphabets and numerals, some decorated, others in hollow letters; others decorated letters, with various stitched bands between. At the bottom, Louisa Leverings work done in the 8th year of her age 1834, between blooming pots of flowers. Under glass, in ebonized and copper enamel frame. To back of frame, McClees /1507 Walnut Street /Philadelphia /GALLERIES label. Philadelphia, PA. 1834. {Approximate measurements: 16 1/4 x 17 3/8" sight; 19 x 20 1/2" framed.}. Condition: Three light splotches / stains, 5 bands down from the top, toward the right side; the weaves itself loose four bands from the bottom, center right. Some fading throughout. Notes: Louisa Levering was born in Alexandria VA in 1824, and married Charles Fergusson on 12 January 1847, in Baltimore, MD. She died in 1865.
