Description
Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A mold-formed cup or lamp created with semi-translucent, yellow-hued glass where the true color can only be viewed when placed next to a bright light source. The inverted bell-shaped body rests on a flat base and has thick walls, a dense rim, and a protruding kick centered within the basin. Cup lamps like this example were filled with slow-burning oil along with wicks placed inside the oil to burn at a constant rate. Size: 3.1" W x 2.2" H (7.9 cm x 5.6 cm)
Provenance: ex-private Virginia, USA collection, before 2000

Condition
Repair to section of rim with resurfacing and overpainting along break lines. Minor abrasions and smooth encrustations across most surfaces. Great preservation to overall form. Glass color is visible when placed next to a bright light source.
