Greaton signed the receipt on the verso, "Jno. Greaton." An informative document regarding prices for military supplies necessary for outfitting a company in 1776. Manuscript document account from Capt. Edward Payson Williams to John Greaton itemizing charges for supplies for his company from the first quarter of 1776. Following the reorganization of the Continental Army in 1776, John Greaton (1741-1783) was made colonel of the 24th Continental Regiment (also known as the 3rd Massachusetts Regiment) effective at the beginning of the year. Prior to accepting a commission with the militia in 1774, he worked as a merchant in his family's business and would have been very familiar with documents such as this. In the spring of 1776, Greaton and his regiment were ordered to Canada to aid in the reinforcements of the ill-fated invasion. Greaton saw action at the battles of Bunker Hill, Trois-Rivières, Valcour Island, and Saratoga and was appointed brigadier general in early 1783. Condition: Two separations along folds at left edge measuring 2.75" and 3.75" respectively. Three small open tears are located at the corners; the remaining corner has a paper attachment and dried adhesive at verso, presumably from prior mounting. A few pinholes, some of which cross signature. HID03101062020 © 2022 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved
