Description
John Glover and Horatio Gates document signed ("Horatio Gates" and "John Glover B. General"). Two pages on one leaf, 7.75" x 9.25", Providence, [Rhode Island]; April 13 and 14, 1779. Docketed. Two American Generals, John Glover and Horatio Gates sign documents approving payment to a soldier for transporting a deserter. Document signed by Jeremiah Jackson, requesting payment for expenses of transporting a deserter back to camp. The document is approved and signed by Brigadier General John Glover. The document reads, in part: "To Ens Jackson of Coll Shepard Regt for traviling [sic] expenses John Bd. Molten a Deserter Myself and hors [sic] Seven Days at 3 Dollars pr Day & for Expenses for a guard and taking said Bd Molten and Bringing him to Camp....Jere Jackson" "Personally appeared, Ensign Jackson, and Maid oath, to the Truth of the above Acct. before me." Signed, "John Glover / B. General". The next day, April 14, Major General Gates orders the payment to Jackson on the verso of Glover's signed document. The document reads, in part: "To Benjn. Steele, Esq. paymaster. Pay unto Ensign Jere Jackson, the within Account of Thirty pounds eighteen shillings. Amt. equal to One Hundred and three Dollars—for which this, with his receipt hereon Endorsed, shall be your sufficient Warrant." Signed, "Horatio Gates". John Glover (1732-1797), born in Salem, Massachusetts, served in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War, achieving the rank of brigadier general. He and his men transported General George Washington's army across the Delaware River at Trenton. Before his military career, Glover worked as a fisherman and merchant. At the time he signed this document, he was stationed in Rhode Island, where American forces were defeated by the British the previous August. He would move to the Hudson River region to help guard against British movements for the remainder of the war. Horatio Gates (1727-1806), born in England and later moving to Virginia, served in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War, achieving the rank of major general, the rank he had when he signed the document offered here. Gates is best known for leading American forces in the major victory against the British in the Battle of Saratoga in 1777. At the time he signed this document, Gates was serving as commander of the Eastern Department of the Continental Army. The document is accompanied by typed transcriptions and an engraved vignette portrait of Glover in uniform by H. B. Hall. Condition: Affixed along left edge to larger mounting paper that measures 8.25" x 10.5". Lower left edge detached from mounting paper with .75" x 1" area of loss. Edgewear, with 1.25" closed tear at left edge of horizonal fold. Dampstain at left edge of document extending to center. Light foxing, chiefly located at upper edges.
