Description
William Paca document signed ("Wm. Paca") as Governor of Maryland. One page, 16.25" x 11.5", no place, [Annapolis, Maryland?]; December 5, 1782. Docketed. William Paca, signer of the Declaration of Independence, signs a land grant as Governor of Maryland. Manuscript land grant, written in a secretarial hand and signed by Paca as Governor of Maryland, for a Mr. Francis Deakins concerning land in Frederick County, Maryland. The document reads, in part: "The State of Maryland To all Persons to whom these Presents shall come Greeting Know Ye That whereas Francis Deakins had on the seventh day of April seventeen hundred and seventy seven surveyed and laid out for him a Tract or Parcel of Land called Addition to Adventure lying in Frederick County and containing thirty Acres, by virtue of twenty two Acres and one quarter of an Acre part of sixty two Acres and one quarter of an Acre of special Warrant received for him...Together with all Rights Profits Benefits and Privileges thereunto belonging. To have and to holed the same unto him the said Francis Deakins his heirs and assigns forever." Signed, "Wm. Paca." Countersigned by Chancellor John Rogers. William Paca (1740-1799) represented Maryland in the First and Second Continental Congresses and signed the Declaration of Independence on August 2, 1776. He was elected the third governor of Maryland from 1782 to 1785 and served as a district judge of the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland from 1789 to 1799. An engraving of Paca by P. Maverick accompanies the document. The Francis Deakins referred to in this land grant is presumably Francis Deakins (1739–1804), born in Prince George's County, Maryland, who served in the Maryland militia as an officer. He was also a land surveyor and speculator who owned considerable property near the Monocacy River. Condition: Splitting starting, with partial separation along at center of the document at one fold. Small areas of paper loss at intersections of fold that do not affect legibility. Some folds reinforced on verso with archival tape. Rough edges. Some scattered soiling, foxing and toning.
