AN INDIAN COLONIAL SILVER BALUSTER LIDDED TANKARDTWENTYMAN & CO., CIRCA 1835With a domed and gadrooned finial to the floral chased domed cover and a floral tongue capped scroll handle, the baluster body half chased with a floral spray band and engraved 'To Captain John Herring from his friend Major J. C. B. Parke as a small token of his regard and esteem, for his cordial ready support and assistance, ever afforded while associated together on the General Staff under Lt. Gen. Sir G. Martindell K. C. B.', on a circular moulded spreading base21cm (8 1/4in) high 992g (31.9 oz) John Herring arrived in India on the 10th Sept 1805. He rose to the rank of Lieutenant during the Nepal War in 1814 - 1815. His Indian military adventures took him to Afghanistan during the First Afghan War of 1838-42 as a Lieutenant-Colonel in the 37th Regiment of the Bengal Native Infantry. He was murdered by tribesmen at Haidar Khel in Afghanistan on 3rd December 1839, and was buried in Kabul two days later.
