畫面中茂林密數，草木華滋，展現一幅寧靜恬淡的山野美景。近景坡坨林木，溪流蜿蜒；中景各式丘巒羅列，屋舍點綴；隨著畫面右方之山巒逐漸攀高，引領觀者視線隨之移動，帶向遠景的縹緲高山，山谷間升起茫茫雲氣，表現蒼莽迷蒙意趣，饒富清逸之氣。畫中主要以披麻皴描繪山石，乾筆皴擦、淡墨暈染，明暗對比營造出立體感，邊緣多以橫向米點強調點綴；樹葉或以側鋒臥筆大點橫貫，或濃淡墨相互交疊，或直接落筆畫線成葉，表現技法多元豐富，充分顯示出神入化的筆墨技法。
董其昌（1555－1636），字玄宰，號思白、思翁，別號香光居士。萬曆十七年（1589年）進士，授翰林院庶吉士，官至禮部尚書。不僅是明代後期的藝壇領袖，亦為啟迪後世無數書畫家的一代宗師，其書畫作品與理論以「妙在能合，神在能離」為追求境界。提出唐代以來繪畫「南北分宗」的發展史觀，並超越傳統臨仿格局，提倡「初以古人為師，後以造物為師」，引領其後文人畫風的轉變。北京故宮博物院庋藏董其昌〈林和靖詩意圖軸〉，與本品皆為董氏取古人詩意參合造畫與自身筆意之山水創作，可資參考。
本作題有唐代詩人皇甫曾《秋夕寄懷契上人》詩句：「窗臨絕澗聞流水，客至孤峰掃白雲。」董其昌取法黃公望畫法「凡山俱要有凹凸之形，先勾山外勢形象，其中用直皴，此子久法也。」、「凡破墨須由淡入濃」，形成蒼渾中具平淡天真的韻致。畫家以形寫神，闡釋對自然山川的本質感悟，與高逸脫俗詩意相互應和，筆墨於明秀中見古拙，境界於平實中見變化，體現畫家率然任興、天真爛漫的自家面貌，為畫家師古而又師心自創之佳作。
本作有「子韶審定」鑑藏印，出自廣東官商巨富、字畫收藏家潘仕成。潘仕成(1804－1873)，字德畬、德輿、子韶，祖籍漳州，世居廣州，是晚清享譽朝野的官商巨富。其繼承家業經營鹽務，以至洋務，成為廣州十三行的鉅賈。經商之餘熱心公益、文化教育及藝術收藏，於嶺南興建私人宅院「海山仙館」，館中所藏金石、古帖、古籍、古畫等，有「粵東第一」之稱。
