國師面龐略微修長，額際高廣，禿頂，濃眉，目光炯炯，高鼻大耳，唇邊、下顎蓄有鬍髭，雙唇緊抿，神態慈祥安寧。身著灰色僧服，外罩紅底綠格紋袒右肩袈裟，盤腿坐於碧玉雲紋高背木椅，椅下踏板上置有綠面僧鞋一雙。雙手平放於膝，右手執一柄拂塵，左手輕撫塵尾，姿態雍容閒適。全幅背景光素，主題人物清晰明確，繪工細膩，人物面容、肌膚以纖細淡墨描繪，服飾及家具則以較粗重線條表現，顯現出不同質感。色彩部分賦彩飽滿，色澤穩重，展現國師雍容氣度。畫面左上方題寫「圓覺國師之真」，應為韓國天台宗圓覺國師。
圓覺國師（1107－1174）為高麗王朝僧人，漢字名為「德素」。9歲時師從清國寺義川弟子喬雄，被讚揚其為能繁榮天台宗之人。後被仁祖讚高度評價，認為其將來必能成為大禪師。於高麗毅宗7年（1153年）成為禪師，精通禪宗法理。在國王三度懇求下，於明宗1年（1171年）接受王師之職務。在圓覺的帶領下，天台宗走向鼎盛，更培養出眾多高僧，貢獻深遠。圓寂後，國王將其遺骨安置寧國寺，並於1180年建造石碑紀念，碑文由韓文俊撰寫。
韓國稱高僧晝像為「真影」或「影幀」，佛寺中一般建國師殿、真影閣、祖師堂等殿閣供奉高僧祖師。如韓國松廣寺供奉有歷代國師畫幀，多為披袈裟之剃髮比丘造形，且為坐椅全身像，形式與本品相同。然椅子並非朝鮮的生活用品，而是在中國宋代，人們始垂足而坐，椅子漸流行於上流社會，顯見朝鮮社會受中國文化影響。細觀本品，其靠背椅為中國宋代使用最多的造形，且椅背嵌碧玉又精雕雲紋，更顯國師尊貴身分，為極具歷史價值之佛教美術作品。
本作為 Alan L. Gans 醫師購自 Ralph M. Chait Galleries，曾分別於1976、1979及1996年委請 Hastings House Antiques 估價，並由 Philip Hastings McNemer 和 Milon A. Barnes 開立鑑價證書。Philip Hastings McNemer 出生於伊利諾伊州開羅，其父為 Philip Hamilton McNemer 博士。Hastings 畢業於德州農工大學，曾在駐韓美軍服役四年，獲上尉軍銜。退伍後至日本旅遊期間，引起對亞洲藝術之興趣，回國後與友人 Milon A. Barnes 一同開始進行收藏。兩人於1962年成立 Hastings House Antiques。曾參與全國頂級古董展，兩人非凡的眼光使之成為古董圈的卓越標竿。
