本作描繪清代貴族雅士於庭園中行樂之情景。庭園中迴廊彎繞，樹木林立，屋簷下一位氣度優雅，風度翩翩的雅士身著繡有蘭花紋的白色長袍，閒適舒坐，右手置於膝上摩娑扳指，左手持鼻煙壺把玩。身旁小几上有紅釉花瓶，身後窗戶大開，房內桌案上置有青銅觚及白瓷盤，盤中擺放佛手，觚內插置紅花，一旁靜置書冊，充滿文雅靜謐之氣。畫家於廊柱上落款「廣陵禹之鼎畫」，布局頗具巧思。整體畫面構圖均衡，工筆、沒骨技法並用，展現純熟繪畫功力。人物面容既有淡墨渲染的堅實結構起伏，又有重色暈罩的明潤肌膚色澤，形貌逼肖，立體感強烈。
禹之鼎（1647－1709），字尚吉，號慎齋，江蘇興化人。幼師藍瑛，苦練丹青，康熙二十年（1681年）官鴻臚寺序，以善畫供奉南薰殿，擅長人物，尤以肖像著稱，入京供奉內廷後，譽滿京師，一時名人肖像皆出其手。其肖像畫既受曾鯨影響，又不受局限，將白描、墨骨、色暈諸法融為一體，既是對傳統的集成，也成為一種新風格，寫真技藝高超。且人物動態和環境力求真實，作品富有親和力，傑出的藝術成就得到世人公認，畫史謂其「工善寫照，一時稱絕」。
