Item Details
Description
Ancient Greece, Athens (Attic), ca. late 6th to early 5th century BCE. A finely-modeled, wheel-thrown pottery lekythos - a vessel used to store scented oils or other perfumes - boasting a lustrous, jet-black glaze enveloping the body and a skillfully painted phytomorphic motif along the shoulder. Sitting upon a discoid foot, the graceful vessel displays a flared rim, a slender neck, a broad, flat shoulder, and a tapering body with an arched handle connecting neck to shoulder edge. A vine and leaf design, segmented by repeating white frets adorns the shoulder, while the body, foot, handle, and rim are all coated in black glaze. Liberal remains of red bands further decorate the body. Size: 2.1" Diameter x 4.2" H (5.3 cm x 10.7 cm)

Lekythoi were used for storing oil used for a wide variety of purposes in the Classical World. While larger examples were usually designated for keeping olive oil, smaller more delicate examples like this one were reserved for the bath to store precious unguents of sweet and floral aromas. This beautiful vessel was most likely created for an elegant lady's toilette.
