A BIRCH PEG TANKARD, NORWEGIAN, 18TH CENTURY, IN THE MANNER OF M. HAGE, the hinged domed cover centred by a lion rampant within a scrolling foliate band, a further lion surmounting the thumbpiece and incised decoration running down the handle, raised on three lion-form feet. 20cm high Note: Containers like this were used to serve sour cream porridge (rømmegrøt). They also carried a ritual significance and were often given to mothers after childbirth
