China, Han Dynasty, ca. 206 BCE to 220 CE. A fine, mold-made pottery figure known as a ming-chi, boasting liberal remains of a vibrant orange pigment. Depicted kneeling, the ancient figure features a plump body draped in thick robes with a prominent neck collar. He bends both arms before him, resting his left hand atop a petite stool at his lap and holding a circular object to his belly with his right hand. His round visage faces forward displaying slender eyes, a button nose, round cheeks, and a warm smile, all crowned by a flat-topped headdress. Size: 5" W x 7.3" H (12.7 cm x 18.5 cm)
