Item Details
Description
A very rare pair of Staffordshire saltglaze models of Hawks, circa 1755-60
The birds standing upright and looking straight ahead, perched on rockwork bases, cast in white saltglaze with the eyes, beaks and bases glazed in dark brown, 16.5cm high (2)
Footnotes:
These splendid models were apparently copied from earlier Japanese export porcelain prototypes, decorated in a similar manner. Staffordshire saltglaze hawks were made in several different sizes and vary in their colouring, from simple brown washes as here, to full polychrome enamelling. A larger pair, coloured as the present lot, is in the Weldon Collection at the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation (inv. no.G1969-11).
