Ulysses, FIRST EDITION, AUTHOR'S PRESENTATION COPY TO AUGUST SUTER, inscribed on the half-title 'To August Suter / James Joyce, Paris 27 February 1922', number 389 of 750 copies on hand-made paper, from an edition limited to 1,000 copies, initial blank, half-title and final 4 leaves repaired (half-title with 8cm closed tear not touching text), later black morocco [Slocum & Cahoon A17; Connolly, 'The Modern Movement' 42], 4to, Paris, Shakespeare and Company, 1922
Footnotes:
A VERY EARLY PRESENTATION COPY TO ONE OF JOYCE'S ZURICH FRIENDS.

August Suter (1887-1965) was a Swiss sculptor who first met Joyce in Zurich in 1917, through Frank Budgen. Suter recollected, 'When Joyce saw me entering he called out 'That is Buck Mulligan!' I dislike comparisons of this kind, and in my reserve I noticed at once that, in the way a painter uses his models for his compositions, Joyce was assigning roles to the members of his company and that he imperceptibly brought on the conversation that he happened to need for his work' (Suter's notes translated and published as 'Some Reminiscences of James Joyce', James Joyce Quarterly, vol. 7, no. 3 (Spring, 1970), pp.191-198). Suter became friends with Joyce, sharing walks and literary recommendations. He continues, 'I settled in Paris in 1922 and consequently saw much of Joyce, spending many evenings with him'. Later Joyce sat for Suter who produced a bust of him, which was destroyed during the war. In January 1941 August Suter was the only member of the old Zurich circle of friends who was able to attend Joyce's funeral.

Ulysses was scheduled for publication on Joyce's fortieth birthday (2 February 1922), but only two copies were ready on that date owing to technical difficulties in printing the cover, the colour of which Joyce wanted to match with the blue of the Greek flag. One of these was the copy delivered by Sylvia Beach to Joyce on 2 February, which he inscribed to his wife Nora. A copy inscribed to American translator Lewis Galantière on 11 February was sold by Bonhams in Pasadena in 2016; Joyce inscribed another that day to his brother Stanislaus, and further copies a few days later to Sylvia Beach, Harriet Shaw Weaver, Margaret Anderson, and Robert McAlmon. We have not traced any other presentation copies from February 1922, the month of Ulysses' publication.
