1728 STATUUM MAROCCA NORUM (Morocco) Hand-Colored Vignetted Map by Johann Christoph Homann
1728-Dated, Hand-colored Map, STATUUM MAROCCA NORUM (Morocco) by Johann Christoph Homann, Framed, Choice Very Fine.
A bold illustrated Map made all the more attractive by the large decorative vignette at upper left showing Moroccan Natives, a Lion, a Horned Snake, a Naval Battles between Ships approaching a harbor, and even an Ostrich. The engraved plate portion size of this map is 22" x 19.25" and is framed under glass to an overall size of 23" x 25.75." Two large City-Views below the upper Map show the City of Morocco and the King's Residence at Mequinetz. This Map shows the area of modern-day Morocco down to the bottom border of where the disputed territory of the Western Sahara begins. The Territories of Segelmes and Tafilet are now part of modern-day Algeria. Most of the city names and territories are antiquated and unrecognizable, having been renamed in later years by both Muslims and the French. For instance, "Casablanca" now the largest city in Morocco shows up as a small dot with the name "Anfa yel Anafe". Typical double-sheet with vertical centerfold, some trivial light foxing yet its overall presentation is quite pleasing with nice eye appeal. Ready to hang on display.
Johann Cristoph Homann was the son of the famous cartographer, Johann Baptist Homann. In 1724, the elder Johann died, leaving the business to his son, Johann Cristoph. After Johann Cristoph's death in 1730, the heirs took over the company and ran it successfully until 1852.
