Professionally-Bound Volume of, Harper's New Monthly Magazine, Vol. XXVI, December 1862 to May 1863 (inclusive), published by Harper & Brothers, New York, 1863, measuring 6.5" x 9.75", containing 864 pages, hardcover in half leather binding, raised spine bands, with gold decoration and colored end papers. The covers exhibit typical wear for the age, while the contents are in excellent condition. Published during the Civil War, there are 309 illustrations throughout the volume. The six "Monthly Records of Current Events" contain reports of the state of affairs in the Civil War, including: Battles, Troop movements, and such.
Among the articles in this volume are 3 by Benson J. Lossing, "Continental Money" (15 pages) an important article illustrated with numerous engravings of Colonial and Continental notes, seals and even a 1776 Lottery Ticket; "The Stamp Act Congress" and "Scenes in the War of 1812" (16 pages) which is also well illustrated and the first of a series of articles, which were published in book form in 1868. Charles E. Lester writes a 10 page account of the Civil War Gunboat "Essex" and Charles Nordhoff has an important 13 page article on the history of "Cards & Dice." California humorist, J. Ross Brown, provides a 3-part, 61 page, illustrated account titled, "A Californian in Iceland" and Alfred H. Guernsey adds an account of hunting in Africa, with numerous exciting engravings. Some of the other articles in this volume include: " Hole-in-the-Day " (5 pages) concerning the Chief of the Ojibway (Chippewa) Indians, with a portrait from a photograph; "The Revolving Tower and Its Inventor" (7 pages) with 5 cuts on the revolving tower used on Civil War gunboats and harbor defenses; and "The Home and Flag" (6 pages) on the United States Flag and the importance of patriotic symbols in time of war. An important volume of Harper's with many useful and interesting articles.
Edwards Lester (1815-1890) and Charles Nordhoff (1830-1901) were journalists who worked for the New York Evening Post during the 1860's.
Alfred Hudson Guernsey (1824-1902) was the editor of Harper's New Monthly Review in the 1860's.
Benson John Lossing (1813-1891) was a noted American historian and wood block engraver, who authored numerous books and articles on U.S. History.
