Description
Art Deco stylings are on full display in this 1930 travel poster for Grenoble by artist Gaston Gorde (1908-1995). The simplified palette of green, blue, and red creates dramatic contrasts between the male tennis player in the Jardin des Dauphins and the city of Grenoble he looks out onto. The French Alps loom in the background as clouds roll in.The Jardin des Dauphins is a public park built into the ancient fortifications surrounding the Alpine town of Grenoble. Once a former estate that was laid to waste following the French Revolution, the gardens were re-imagined at the beginning of the 20th Century as the public recreation area it is today. We are told in this poster that Grenoble is the "capital of the French Alps". While still a major hub for research, universities, and leisure, Grenoble was even more of a busy industrial town when this poster was created.Unfortunately, not much is known of artist Gaston Gorde. He created several other posters in this time period, mostly for events and produced in the French Alpine region. This is an Original Vintage Poster; it is not a reproduction. This poster is conservation mounted, linen backed, and in excellent condition. We guarantee the authenticity of all of our posters.
