Description
**First Time At Auction**
North Pacific, Hawaiian Islands, Pre-Contact Period, ca. 10th to 18th century CE. A collection of 9 stone game pieces and tools made from pumice or coral, most are flattened stone discs for playing 'ulu maika, an ancient Hawaiian sport similar to modern American bowling. The largest is a poi pestle pounder with a flared face and tapered handle. The stones with central grooves are fishing sinkers, a line and hook would be attached via the groove and covered by a large cowrie shell to lure in the octopus or squid. Size of largest (poi pounder): 4" L x 3" Diameter (10.2 cm x 7.6 cm)
Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection, 1995 to 2010; ex-Hawaii, USA collection
