Southeast Asia, Indonesia, western Irian Jaya/West Papua, Asmat people, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. This is a massive architectural panel of a rectangular form, all intricately carved with curvilinear and undulating forms all from a single piece of wood! The mesmerizing motif features flowing organic patterns, spirals and loops, and circles with a central ridge running vertically down the length with several raised handle-like protrusions spaced along the piece. The circular discs within the motifs are large eyes of highly abstract and stylized ancestral spirits - with the central ridge as hooked noses. The verso is outfitted with a modern iron wire for displaying this gorgeous piece! A powerful wooden carving that would have been part of a longhouse, carved for its apotropaic properties.
