Description
A Roman "face urn", 1st – 3rd centuryThe vessel with a conical base and high belly, the latter embellished with three apotropaic human faces. The edge extending slightly outwards at the top, levelled off on the inside. Strap handle on the side, above an indentation in the body. In Roman provinces, vessels with stylised faces were used in private houses for ritual purposes, such as family altars. However, they were also frequently used as cremation urns, both as their primary and secondary function. Partial restoration of cracks and chipping to the left of the handle, particularly on the inside, otherwise largely intact. Height 17 cm. A formidable testimony to Provincial Roman material culture.Condition: II -
