Description
Interesting map shows the world on Mercator projection. Makes special mention of discoveries of the far north, Spitzbergen 1596, Greenland 982, what most likely is Baffin Island called ‘isla James’ 1631, being the dates given of each. Southern South America is called ‘terre Magellanique’. Australia is shown without Tasmania. No Antarctica, while the Pacific Northwest is far better described in great detail, Alaska is named but for a small peninsula. While certain fictional lakes and rivers are shown, in attempts to still hint at a northwest passage. Many islands named in the pacific, Hawaii is called Sandwich islands, shows a new independent United States. 1794 edition by Robert de Vaugondy/ Delamarche, from Nouvel Atlas Portatif', posthumously published. Vaugondy was appointed geographer to the king Louis IV in 1760. Hand colored copper plate engraved. 16 x 11 1/2". Authenticity Guaranteed.
