Description
Albrecht DÜRER1471-1528Cinque soldati e un turco a cavallo.Incisione; mm. 145x138. Bella incisione. Bartsch, Le Peintre graveur n° 88; Koehler 3; Hollstein VII.76.81; Schoch, Mende, and Scherbaum 4c.
Condition
Five Soldiers and a Turk on Horseback.
Engraving; mm. 145x138. Nice copy.
Early nineteenth-century copy of Dürer's original. Also known by other titles, such as "Five Soldiers and a Mounted Turk", "The Assembly of Warriors", "The Six Warriors", "William Tell", "The Robbers" (the latter title due to the allusion that the man represented frontally is just Durer kidnapped by brigands), in reality the engraving could be a simple study of costumes. Durer established the first prototypes for subsequent images of Ottoman Turks. Starting from his first contact with the art of Venice in 1494, the artist turned his gaze to Turkish visitors as he documented their exotic attire. His series of drawings emphasize costumed individuals. Durer's prints also included images of "Turkish" enemies within contemporary German military groups This engraving could also celebrate the imperial infantry, armed with pikes and halberds, while the Turk, on horseback, with the turban behind them, has an air of disapproval and submission.
