East Asia, China, Northern Wei Dynasty, ca. 386 to 535 CE. A finely carved and stylized head of the Buddha in a warm orange-brown sandstone, a lovely fragment from a larger statue. The face has downcast eyes, set beneath two rounded, arched brows. The nose is long and straight, ending in a slight point above a small, closed mouth. The brow is bare of curls or hair nodules, and the ears are elongated. His ovoid head is flanked by two elongated ears with pendulous lobes, evocative of the time before he renounced all worldly possessions and hung lavish jewels from them. A gorgeous piece of ancient Buddhist art! Size: 3.5" L x 2.5" W x 4" H (8.9 cm x 6.4 cm x 10.2 cm)
