Carved from a heavy dense wood with a reddish mineral pigment and incised groove work or linear designs. Such bowls are primarily used by the women to carry burdens, water and even children. Australia, Aboriginal. This Coolamon bowl measures 19 x 10.5 x 4.5 inches deep. The bowl shows field use and wear and is likely an early 20th century example. Provenance: The Evan Maurer collection, Ca, USA.
