Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Moche, ca. 400 to 600 CE. An adorable pottery vessel with a flat base, globular body, wide neck, a thin rim, and twin perforated suspension loops. The neck displays an adorable owl face with a short beak and large, circular eyes with impressed pupils painted in white. The highly burnished body is colored with a pale-orange hue, and faint remains of vertical black stripes along the verse suggest further embellishments were present at one time. Repair and light overpainting to one ear. Expected age-commensurate surface wear, chip to small area of rim, fading and abrasions to orange and white pigment, otherwise very good. Nice earthen deposits throughout.
