Description
Ancient Near East, early Byzantine Empire, ca. 7th to 8th century CE. A lovely piriform transport amphora, wheel-thrown with a tapered, conical body, a squat neck, and a pair of strap handles arching between the carinated shoulder and thick rim. The wide mouth suggests this vessel was once plugged with a plaster cap to keep its contents from evaporating or spilling. Dozens of horizontal ribs created as it was formed on the wheel still retain their grooved texture. Size: 7.5" W x 22.375" H (19 cm x 56.8 cm); 23.1" H (58.7 cm) on included custom stand.
