Item Details
Description
Ancient Near East, Holyland, ca. 1st millennium BCE; Ancient Greece, Hellenistic period, ca. 4th to 1st century BCE; Roman, late Imperial to early Byzantine, ca. 4th to 6th century CE; Western Europe, England, Tudor Period, ca. 16th century CE. A remarkable collection of 6 pottery vessels from the ancient world: a Holyland oil lamp, a Hellenistic spindle jar, a Hellenistic lekythos, a Hellenistic alabastron, a late Roman jar, and a Tudor money box. First, the oil lamp displays a saucer shape with a narrow, pinched spout and a shallow bowl. A distinct edge forms a protruding rim, intended to prevent oil from spilling, and elegantly folds to its narrow wick. Next, the Hellenistic spindle jar features a piriform body with a petite discoid foot, and a convex rim. Black-painted horizontal striations adorn its rounded shoulder and slender neck, while a pair of relief circles embellish the shoulder edge. Size of largest: 5.7" L x 5.5" W x 2.5" H (14.5 cm x 14 cm x 6.4 cm)

The Hellenistic lekythos also exhibits a piriform body and discoid foot, though with a conical neck and a petite ribbon-form handle that arches upward, connecting neck to shoulder. Alternatively, the Hellenistic alabastron presents an ovoid body with a carinated shoulder, a narrow neck, a flared rim, and a rounded base. Fifth, the Roman jar showcases a bulbous body, a ridged shoulder, and a projecting horizontal ring encircling the flared spout. Last, the Tudor money box boasts a unique form with a wide hip, a gently corseted neck, a convex top, and a knob-like handle, all sitting upon a petite, pedestal foot.
