Description

Title: 19th c Salt Glaze Charles Meigh English Parian Ware Apostle 8 ½” Pitcher

Size: 6 ¾” (17.1 cm) wide x 4 ½” (11.4 cm) diameter x 8 ½” (21.6 cm) tall.

Description: A very crisply-defined Parian ware pitcher with every surface decorated. It even has multiple faces on the handle.

The pitcher is molded and has a bisque like finish. The interior has a shiny smooth glaze. The Gothic design features Kings and saints depicted with almost photo quality craftsmanship in architectural niches. The handle is squared with two molded faces.

According to the Victoria & Albert Museum, this 'apostle' jug, in the Gothic style, is one of the most iconic and successful of relief-moulded jug designs and depicts figures in architectural niches. The design was originally registered in 1842 by Charles Meigh. Charles Meigh (later with his sons) made earthenware at the Old Hall Works or Pottery in Hanley, Staffordshire, England, starting in 1839 and continued doing so until the early 1860s .

The pitcher has a short pedestal base. The numbers “54” and “81” are impressed on the base.

MEASUREMENTS

6 ¾” (17.1 cm) wide x 4 ½” (11.4 cm) diameter x 8 ½” (21.6 cm) tall. Weighs 1 lb 15.8 oz (895 g)

CONDITION

There are no breaks, chips, or cracks. There are manufacture flaws such as small dots, and a mold line down the handle. The pitcher is a bit soiled with brown stains throughout, a small rust stain in the very inside bottom, and light wear to the handle and edge of the foot.

An amazing molded Parian ware pitcher to add to a collection or use in a white monochrome room. The sharpness of the detail is quite amazing.
