Description
The Prayer by Taber Sears is a wonderful watercolor and gouache / paper depicting a religious portrait potential of a Bishop or of Moses. Famed for his biblical church murals, this is wery well done piece by Sears that is in great condition. Signed lower left by Taber Sears. Vibrant crisp border of artwork is in the unique shape of a window of a church as is the black mat cut to match the outer border of the artwork and paper backing on verso also in black. Comes in gold painted wood frame under mat that was framed by Artsake Framing out of Damariscotta, Maine. Unique size framed is approximately 14.25 inches by 30.5 inches. Active in New York, Sears is well known for his watercolors and other mediums of church murals, portraits, genre, landscape, and marine paintings. Taber Sears was a direct decedent of Richard Sears who was a settler of Plymouth in 1630. Taber was a highly trained artist with education that included the Boston Fine Arts School , the Julian Academy in Paris where he worked under Jean Laurens, and later in Italy. During his tenure as a church mural artist he worked collectively with artists Kenyon Cox, John LaFarget and E.H. Blashfield and was once the treasurer for the Society of Mural Painters. Some of his Taber Sears most well known work include the murals he did for St. James Protestant Episcopal Church, Church of the Ascension, Old First Presbyterian Church, amongst others in New York as well as other church murals in various other cities. Murals of Sears include The Transfiguration, The Consecration of Bishop Manning, Adoration of the Magi, The Resurrection, and many more. Taber Sears work has been exhibited National Academy of Design and won several prizes including the Delano prize from the New York Water Color Club in 1928. Very active in the artist community, during his life time, Taber Sears He was a longtime member as well as the President of the Municipal Art Society of New York from 1923-1926. Sears was also involved on various levels with the American Artists Professional League, the American Water Color Society, Audubon Artists and Allied Artists of America, the Century Club, the Salmagundi Club, amongst others. Condition
Great condition both artwork and frame. Artwork viewed by naked eye and under UV light. Artwork is crisp with no signs of fading. Signature is clear. Frame and mat is unique in size and shape as is the artwork. Framed under mat and glass with black paper backing on verso.
