Item Details
Description
Native American, Southwestern United States, Hopi, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A fabulous hand drum comprised of 2 circular pieces of animal hide sewn with animal sinew around a slender wooden shell. Adorned with red, black, and green pigments, the batter and snare heads feature a starburst motif on 1 side and a wheel design surrounded by a zigzag border on the other. A handle made from twisted animal sinew sits at the top of the drum, tied to the crisscrossed sinew that secures the animal hide, while a red string with 3 blue glass beads is tied to the handle. The side opposite the handle shows an additional decoration of a blue string with 2 red glass beads. A plant vine holds the tree bark shell together. Strike the animal hide to produce a lovely reverberating sound! Size: 11.7" Diameter x 2.5" W (29.7 cm x 6.4 cm)

Condition
Still functions as a drum. Slight bending to shell, but form is still clear. Perforation to head with wheel design and 2 drill holes to shell. A few minor areas of abrasions and peeling to hide. Otherwise, great with nice patina and liberal remains of pigments.
