Native American, Southwestern United States, Hopi, ca. 20th century CE. A splendid and sizeable drum comprised of 2 circular pieces of raw animal hide sewn with animal sinew around a slender wooden shell and accompanied by a beater made with a wooden handle and blue jean beating head. Vibrant, red pigment adorns the snare and batter heads, while a twisted leather handle protrudes from the top, tied to the crisscrossed sinew that secures the animal hide. The instrument is further embellished by 2 slender strands of red glass beads - 1 strapped between the handle and the animal sinew on 1 side and the other dangling from the handle and terminating in a wood fragment at the other. A piece of pink, yellow, and green woven fabric is also tied to the handle. The beater fits securely into a petite perforation on 1 side of the drum, allowing it to be stored for future use. Imagine the resonant sounds that once reverberated from the massive instrument during a traditional ceremony! Size: 22.7" Diameter x 3.4" W (57.7 cm x 8.6 cm)
