Pre-Columbian, Central Coast of Peru, Chimu, ca. 1100 to 1470 CE. An interesting textile fragment, perhaps part of a sash at one time, that is tightly woven from natural cotton or camelid (alpaca or llama wool) fibers in hues of coral, goldenrod, burnt ochre, and jet. The intriguing motif presents a central register of 4 abstract anthropomorphic figures with trapezoidal heads, attenuated legs, and bent arms. Each head features a drooping tendril that is perhaps part of a cap, and each figure raises one arm above their respective heads in a dancing motion. The figures are separated by stepped X-form motifs filled with petite spots, and the upper and lower registers feature repeating, inversely corresponding wave motifs. Size (textile): 11.6" L x 6.75" W (29.5 cm x 17.1 cm); (frame): 13.375" W x 10.4" H (34 cm x 26.4 cm)

Textile fragment has not been examined outside of display frame. Textile is a fragment of a larger composition. Minor loosening and fraying as well as small losses to some interior and peripheral fibers, with fading and staining to pigment in scattered areas. Nice preservation to figures and decorative motifs.
