Description
13th-15th century A.D. An openwork circular pilgrim's badge with central fleur-de-lys, raised pellet to the centre and around the frame; incomplete. Cf. Spencer, B., Pilgrim Souvenirs and Secular Badges The Stationery Office, London, 1998, item nos.174-176, mostly dated 15th century A.D'; cf. The British Museum, museum numbers 1856, 0701.3021 and 1836, 0610.15, for similar, dated 13th-15th century A.D. 1.11 grams, 16 mm (5/8 in.) Found Thames foreshore, Billingsgate, London, UK. The fleur is associated with Virgin Mary, specifically with the Annunciation. Badges similar to this, are common to London and it has been suggested that they are another Canterbury emblem (Spencer 1998). [No Reserve]
