Description
Taken in Anadarko, Oklahoma Territory around 1900 by female photographer "Mrs. CR Hume," a note on the reverse of the photo reads, “Mattie Ware with [unintelligible} and Henry, her children.” Wrapped in a gorgeous blanket, Ms. Ware gazes at the lens while her two children fidget to her left. Both appear to be playing with small toy whips. The younger of the two children is barefoot.
Anadarko, a small city southwest of Oklahoma City, is the self-proclaimed “Indian Capitol of the Nation." The town is situated between historic Wichita, Caddo, and Delaware reservations to the north, and historic Kiowa, Comanche, and Apache reservations to the south. It is unclear what tribe these particular subjects were affiliated with.
Mrs. CR Hume was the wife of Charles R. Hume, who was appointed as the Doctor for the Kiowa Indian Agency in 1890.
[Comanche, Native American, Indian] [19th Century Photography, Daguerreotype, Ambrotype, Tintype, CDV, carte-de-visite, albumen, cabinet card]
