 Dear Father,

I take this opportunity to let you know that I am well at present and hoping that these few lines may find you all in good health. We have been in a fight at Chattanooga. We whipped the rebels. We had one killed and four wounded in our company. The Rebs retreated and we followed them a hundred miles. We had some hard times—scare of rations. I hadn’t had a letter from you for a long time. We had to forage for all we had to eat for seventeen days. We have no tents to sleep in. We sleep out in the pure air. The weather is tolerable cold. I don’t expect to come home till my time is out. So nothing more at present. When we get settled down, I will write more. write soon.
