Item Details
Description
Central America, Mexico, Chiapas region, Community of Santa Maria Magdalena Aldama, Tzotzil Maya, ca. late 19th to mid-20th century CE. A beautiful hand woven huipil poncho made from cotton and wool dyed in vibrant colors. The garment is composed of 3 white cotton panels sewn together, and a square head opening cut and hemmed into the center of the central panel. The shoulders, neck, and chest are decorated with patterns using thicker woolen fibers of red, yellow, teal, fuchsia, and black- creating a textured brocade with floating strands on the interior. Huipils are loose fitting tunics worn by woman of central America, the sides are sometimes sewn to fit more like a shirt or left open like a poncho. The huipil patterns and colors could identify specific cultural groups and continues to be a significant sign of heritage in Latin America! Size (laid flat): 34" L x 48" W (86.4 cm x 121.9 cm)
