Item Details
Description
Latin America, Mexico, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A handsome felted wool sombrero hat with corded bands around the base of the crown. The felt is a warm brown with a leather sweat band and a white cloth liner on the interior of the crown. The lining is stamped with the makers mark: "Monte Carlo." The sombrero is an iconic wide-brimmed hat that gives ample shade and was traditionally worn when riding. Wool examples, such as this, also offered rain protection. The material used in sombreros indicated status, and a handmade felted wool hat was a sign of wealth. A very nice example! Size: 22" W x 10" H (55.9 cm x 25.4 cm); head opening: 6.125" W (15.6 cm)
