Ransom Olds Extremely Rare Signed Stock Certificate - Only Signed 1 Day!
1p, measuring 12.75” x 8.5”, Michigan, dated January 10, 1916. An REO Motor Car Company certificate, No. L.0.464, issuing 40 shares ($10 each) of Capital Stock to Hortense N. Solomon. Signed "RE Olds" as President at the lower margin, countersigned by "DE Bates" as Secretary. With cancellation "R" punches through both signatures. Blind embossed seal at the bottom center. Additional stamps and cancel punches on the front and on verso. With a record of transfer to Hornblower & Weeks on August 23, 1918 on verso. The stock certificate has flattened folds and creasing. Light toning and soiling throughout. Boldly signed by all, with a cancel punch through Olds' signature.
Ransom Eli Olds (1864-1950) was a pioneer of the American automotive industry, for whom both the Oldsmobile and REO brands were named. He claimed to have built his first steam car as early as 1894 and his first gasoline-powered car in 1896. Both the modern assembly line and its basic concept have been credited to Olds, who used it to build the first mass-produced automobile, the Oldsmobile Curved Dash. This item is particularly rare as Olds only signed a small number of stocks. Most REO stock certificates are signed by the Vice President, but on one single day (January 10, 1916), Olds himself signed a few as President.
This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
