Description
Oceania, Northern Papua New Guinea, Irian Jaya, Dani peoples, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A lengthy hand-woven or knit fiber band known as a jetak decorated with yellow orchid fiber embroidery, tufts of pig hide, dried seed pods, and shells. The large cowrie shells and pieces of dried skin are sewn at even intervals in the center of the band, and the outer hems with oblong seeds known as Job's tears, pods from a type of cereal crop or grain bearing plant from this region. These large "belts" may have been a way to store shell currency / trade items or funerary offerings, and the band could also serve as a tool to measure pigs to determine worth and payment. Fraying to terminal ends and orchid strips, shells, and seed attachments. Losses to hide appliques and loose hide panel. Missing several seeds. Overall good condition and a rare item of a lengthy size.
