Fred McDarrah's classic image depicting Warhol among his stacked Brillo boxes at Eleanor Ward's Stable Gallery in April 1964. The exhibition marked the second appearance of his boxes, dozens of them, after displaying just a few at the Dwan Gallery in Los Angeles two months earlier. Besides Brillo, the show at Stable Gallery included boxes of all varieties including Kellogg's Cornflakes, Campbell's Tomato Juice, etc. The New York Times reviewer wrote: "Is this an art gallery or Gristede's warehouse? ... Stacked from floor to ceiling were some 400 plywood grocery cartons ... That was the show. As one observer said, 'Anti-Art with capital A's.'" Despite the review, this would be Warhol's final show at Stable: that September he signed with legendary gallerist Leo Castelli.
