Description
Early 19th century hand drawn and water colored map titled "Asia" measuring 17.5" x 21.5" (sight) housed in period frame measuring 19.5" x 23.5". Map includes regions titled; Russia, Chinese Empire, Tibet, Persia, Turkey, Hindostan, Berman Empire, Nippon, China, Independent Tartary and others. Reverse of frame exhibits fragment of old label with text "This map was made by Mr. Samuel Stiles whose wife was a granddaughter of Cornelius Clark, one of the settlers of Sherburn." Sherburne, New York located in central New York was settled in the late 18th century by a group of persons originally from the town of Kent, Connecticut. These settlers included Cornelius Clark (1749-1810) an ex-Revolutionary War soldier who became a surveyor, farmer, cooper and blacksmith in Sherburne, New York. Samuel Stiles (1798-1884) was born in Solon, New York and married Clark's granddaughter Rachael Wilder (?-1882) on June 14, 1836. Samuel Stiles was a farmer and manufacturer of woolen goods.
