Description
MICHAEL DAHL (SWEDISH-BRITISH, 1659-1743), ATTRIBUTED, PORTRAIT OF PHILIP BYERLEY, oil on canvas, striking three-quarter length depiction of a standing figure wearing large powdered wig, vibrant red coat, and embroidered vest, a rapier at his waist, his right arm resting on a table, inscribed "PHIL: BYERLEY Esq / BROTHER TO COLL. / BYERLEY" upper right. Housed in an old gilt frame, likely a liner for a larger frame. Fourth quarter 17th century. 49 1/4" x 39 1/4" sight, 52 1/2" x 42 1/2" OA.
Provenance: From an Eastern Virginia private collection.
Catalogue Note: The present painting, was likely commissioned along with a number of other portraits of Byerley family members, by Col. Robert Byerley (1660-1714) for placement in Goldsborough Hall, a large estate in the North Yorkshires. Given that Phillip Byerley, the sitter, died in 1674, the present work is most likely a posthumous depiction. Col. Robert Byerley served in several military campaigns and as a Member of Parliament for County Durham, 1697 - 1710. According to legend, Byerley captured a horse at the Battle of Buda in 1686 and brought it back to his estate, where it became known as the "Byerley Turk", the equine patriarch of all modern thoroughbreds.
