Description
Native American, Western United States, Plains Tribes, Lakota (Sioux), ca. late 19th to mid 20th century CE. A collection of a several dozen glass beads and 25 bison incisor teeth, strung on a cord as a necklace in a symmetrical arrangement. The glass trade beads consist of tubular yellow with swirls of red and blue flanked by spherical Hudson Bay white heart beads- an opaque white core covered with a semi-translucent red coating. The root end of each tooth is hand drilled and the enamel is polished exhibiting deep brown hues. Bison were an invaluable animal for many tribes and were used for food, medicine, tools, and clothing. These majestic animals embody the "Old West" and are integral to traditional ways of life and religious beliefs. Size (strand doubled): 28" L (71.1 cm); (teeth): 2" L x 0.75" W (5.1 cm x 1.9 cm)
