Item Details
Description
Native American, Southwestern United States, New Mexico, La Plata region, Ancestral Puebloan (Anasazi), Pueblo III, ca. 1100 to 1250 CE. A beautiful pottery bowl that was formed via the traditional coil-and-scrape method. The hemispherical composition features a round but stable base, thin walls that turn upwards to form the thick rim, and a deep basin enveloped in a white ground. Within the basin is a 7-pointed sunburst motif surrounding an empty center, and around the triangular projections are additional trapezoidal panels filled with thick linear bands; the rim is also decorated with evenly distributed black spots. Three pairs of drilled repair holes are present along the rim as well as on the bottom of the basin and indicate how the owner of this bowl repaired its pieces by feeding twine through the holes and knotting them on the exterior; the original repair threads are no longer present. Size: 11.75" W x 4.75" H (29.8 cm x 12.1 cm); 11.875" H (30.2 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private S.S. collection, Los Angeles, California, USA, acquired in the 1970s from Elmer Truby Ranch, La Plata, New Mexico, USA
