Description
Born in Brooklyn, Phyllis Skolnick Hirschberg studied at the Art Student League and at Cooper Union where she worked with Robert Gwathmey, Will Barnett and Morris Kantor. Her influences ranged from German Expressionism to Japanese woodblocks and Chinese calligraphy. Hirschberg's art has been acclaimed for its clear graphic style and sensitive approach to landscape, portraiture, urban and beach scenes, botanicals and still lives as well as her extraordinary work in woodcuts. In 1946, she created a series of woodblock prints depicting scenes from Voltaire's Candide. Praised by ARTnews in 1948 for her mastery of the medium, the full edition is now housed in the collection of The New York Public Library. The series was also exhibited at Argent Gallery in New York City, alongside woodblock prints by German artist Kathe Kollwitz and later at East Hampton's Glenn Horowitz Gallery.
