"Tommy and the Indians" by Genevieve Cross, illustrations by Steven Vegh, published by Cross Publications, New York, 1950. Stated First Edition.
Hard boards [some wear and staining: see photos]; large format [8.1/2" x 11.1/2"]; no endpapers [as issued?]; small c. 1/4" crease at the bottom of the title page; 35 pages, nice sepia brown lettering and drawings, one two-page color plate in the middle, some foxing and a some wear, very good condition.
A story for children about the first white settlers, Potawatomie Indians and Big Chief Weesaw in c.1850s Michigan. Genevieve Cross was an elementary school teacher and wrote several children's books on the local history in cooperation with the local historical society, Kalamazoo Art Museum, library archives, and private Potawatomie sources. Based on an interesting settler family story, she makes children familiar with Native American way of live and some basic vocabulary.
